Ethical Considerations in Prenatal Ultrasound

(Talantova et al., 2023)

Diagnostic techniques performed during pregnancy are essential for determining the health of unborn children. It is comforting to know that screening embryos for particular genetic problems can identify embryos from couples at high risk of genetic abnormalities or from women of advanced maternal age. Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) contributes to enhanced implantation rates, decreased miscarriage rates, and better embryo selection. But it also comes with extra expenses related to assisted reproductive technologies and hazards to the embryo.

Prenatal diagnostic procedures: When there are known genetic abnormalities or concerns regarding them, one or both genetic parents undergo these tests. Genetic abnormalities in gametes or embryos, which are frequently produced during in vitro fertilisation (IVF), are identified by PGT. The goal is to avoid getting pregnant or giving birth to children who have fatal illnesses, life-limiting diseases, or unpleasant features.
Obstacles and Moral Concerns: Prenatal diagnostic techniques can overwhelm parents and healthcare practitioners, but they can yield crucial information. The abundance of data collected makes decision-making more difficult.
Personalised Decision Support Tools: It is crucial to create these tools with patients' values and concerns taken into account. During counselling, these resources can help clients make well-informed decisions.

One method to deal with uncertainty and the possibility of having a kid impacted by a genetic condition is through prenatal diagnostic tests. They do, however, also bring up their own questions and issues. It is essential to incorporate patients' viewpoints into decision-making processes to overcome these obstacles.
